At Freshly Milled Grains, we believe in the wholesome nutrition that whole grains and freshly milled flour gives to nourish our bodies! I, Tyla, am on a mission to make using Freshly Milled Grains accessible to everyone by providing recipes that anyone can follow!

If I were to sit and chat with you over a good cup of coffee and some blueberry crisp, here is what we would talk about.

I am a city girl, turned homesteader. I love to nourish my family with homemade meals made with food grown on my own homestead. Gardening, raising chickens, sheep and mini donkeys were not on my to do list growing up, but I, along with my husband and our children, found our way into homesteading in 2021 .

While it is hard work to grow our own food, and raise chickens for eggs and meat, we know we are always getting the best and freshest ingredients!

If you want to get straight to the point, 95% of the flour used in the USA is white flour at an extraction rate of 72%. Thanks, Tyla, but what does that mean? Well, it means only 20-30% of the grains original vitamins are retained! (source)

The more I learned about cooking with real foods, baking with sourdough and gut health, I realized that I was missing a big part of the nutrients in our bread, if I was using store bought, shelf stable flour.

This brought me on a research journey about vitamins and nutrients in whole grains, such as wheat berries. Once, I invested in a grain mill, I started researching recipes. I couldn’t find very many recipes that start with freshly milled flour so Freshly Milled Recipes was born!

Carmen is a part time Physical Therapy Assistant has found her niche and calling as a devoted wife and homeschooling mother of 5 beautiful children, 2 girls and 3 boys. She is defined by her strong Christian faith, and is simply loving her homesteading journey on 21 acres in central Texas. She enjoys raising chickens, ducks, quail, turkeys and an ever expanding garden. Cooking is at the top of Carmen’s list of many talents, and she has discovered the benefits of milling flour and using it to create delectable dishes to serve to her family and others.
